Meet Our President

Joan H Lucas

The Fellows of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers are a carefully selected group of experienced family law practitioners who have dedicated their careers to the practice of matrimonial law.

The vision statement of the Minnesota Chapter is:  To reform the family law system statewide to encourage people to resolve their differences with as little financial and emotional cost as possible by maximizing innovated court processes and alternatives to litigation.

As matrimonial lawyers the fellows of the Minnesota Chapter are very aware of the impact of marriage dissolution on families. As a group we strive to understand the goals of our individual clients and to help make the process one that causes the least detriment to the family as a whole. It is our hope that we can assist our clients through the process so that they and their families emerge from the marriage dissolution able to continue to have productive relationships, particularly as they continue to parent their children together.

As experienced practitioners we understand that going through a marriage dissolution is probably one of the most stressful experiences our clients have in their lives. We also understand that our clients may find the legal process confusing and intimidating. We strive to provide a roadmap for our clients through the maze of different steps in the process so that the process becomes more understandable to them. While we understand that this cannot be a pleasant experience for our clients, we hope that they feel that they have been represented in a way that best reflects their goals, while providing them with experienced and professional legal representation.

Joan H. Lucas practices exclusively family law and has extensive experience with the following matters:

  • comprehensive settlements
  • complex property divisions
  • parenting issues
  • child support
  • spousal maintenance awards
  • litigation
  • appeals
In addition to representing clients in court, Ms. Lucas works extensively with clients in mediation and arbitration and is a qualified mediator.

Ms. Lucas is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Minnesota State, Ramsey and Hennepin County Bar Associations. She is included in Best Lawyers in America, and Minnesota Journal Law and Politics "Super Lawyers."
